A FIRE caused extensive damage to the NG Kerk in Platfontein.

Reverend Petrus William Manu said that the cause of the fire had not been confirmed yet.

“The fire started on May 12, at around 2pm. I was in Kimberley at the time and someone called me to tell me the church had gone up in flames,” said Manu.

“The church is not insured and damages of over R18,000 were incurred as the benches, printers, equipment and speakers were burnt.”

He added that the building, which was built in 2008, suffered structural damage, where the walls are not stable and could collapse.

“The fire brigade struggled for a long time to put out the flames. Luckily, no one was injured. We will not be able to rebuild the church any time soon as the congregation is not very wealthy in this area.

“Some of the outer buildings including the early childhood centre were also damaged during the fire.”

Police spokesperson Sergeant Dikeledi Gopane stated that no cases of arson were being investigated.
