A TOP of the table clash is on the cards when the Kimberley Rugby Club (KRC) gears up for the big showdown against Douglas Rugby Club at the Kimberley Rugby Club’s home ground in West End tomorrow (Saturday).

With just one point separating the two teams in the league standings, this battle promises to be nothing short of brutal, with the outcome of the game determining where the final will be played; adding an extra layer of significance to the encounter. Should KRC emerge victorious, the final will be hosted at their home ground, Kimberley. However, if Douglas manages to secure a win, KRC will have to hit the road and travel to Douglas for the League final.

KRC currently sits atop the league with an impressive 46 points, closely followed by Douglas with 45 points. The stakes couldn’t be higher for both teams.

KRC captain Franco Stassen, one of the driving forces behind the team’s success, emphasised the unity and determination that have propelled the team to their current position. Having played together for several years, the KRC players have developed a strong bond and work tirelessly, practising three times a week, to achieve their goals.

“At the beginning of the year, we set ourselves goals, and being at the top of the log was one of them. So far, we’ve managed to accomplish that,” Stassen told the DFA. “Our aim is to win this season, and the dedication and hard work these guys demonstrate on and off the field are a testament to their desire for victory,” he added.

Reflecting on their previous encounter with Douglas, Stassen acknowledged the lessons learned from that defeat.

“Losing to Douglas earlier in the season was a tough pill to swallow, but it taught us valuable lessons. We’ve been working diligently to rectify our mistakes and ensure they won’t be repeated. We can’t afford to lose a second time against them, as it would jeopardise our position at the top of the league.”

Stassen attributed the team’s motivation to a well-defined game plan devised by their coaches. He emphasised the importance of adherence to the strategy and his role in guiding and motivating his teammates throughout the game.

“If I notice a player deviating from the plan, I’ll pull him aside and offer advice to boost his performance. Motivation is a constant process, and we reinforce it with compliments and high fives to let the players know they’re doing a great job.”

One thing is sure, with their sights set on victory, KRC will leave no stone unturned in their quest to secure a win and the privilege of hosting the final at their hallowed home grounds.
