THE NORTHERN Cape bowling fraternity is holding thumbs, hoping that the Northern Cape team at the Under-18 National Championships – that are currently taking place at the Orangia Bowling Club in Bloemfontein – will make them proud at this year’s competition.

Northern Cape Bowls entered two teams in the competition that has been running since Monday, April 3. The finals take place today (Thursday), and the NC teams are still in contention for the top places.

With a total of nine games to play, thus far each of the NC teams has won four of their nine games, while the losses they have taken are by one or two points, so they can still make it to Thursday’s final.

The two Northern Cape Bowls teams are made up of four sub-districts: Kimberley, Kalahari, Intervaal, and Conroy.

The first team is made up of Kieran Kelly (Kimberley), Keegan Minopetros (Kimberley), Daniel Schoeman (Christiana), Kenneth Penderis (Prieska), with Eben Kock (Hanover) the team’s reserve player. The second team features Danie Herholdt (Van der Kloof), Jacen Penderis (Prieska), Nadine Keulder (Prieska), Hannah Rowan (Kimberley), Karabo Siya-Siya (Warrenton) the reserve.

According to the District Secretary of Northern Cape Bowls, Letticia (Maritz) Sterley, due to the travel distances, costs involved, and school commitments, it is a challenge and not easy to get these players to practise together as a team, yet individually they make time at their own clubs to get in much-needed practice. Therefore they are doubly proud of the young bowlers’ dedication and commitment.

“We are very proud of how well they have done thus far and for being selected by their province to represent the Northern Cape at the National Championships,” she said.
