The UDF@40 Northern Cape Chapter has invited the local sports fraternity to a crucial dialogue on the role of sports in the building the future society envisaged in the long walk to freedom of Nelson Mandela.

The dialogue session will be held at the iconic AR Abass Stadium hall, Square Hill Park, Kimberley on Sunday, July 23 at 2pm and all sportsmen and sportswomen are invited.

Sports have historically been one of the sites of our struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic South Africa. Sporting organisations under the banner of the UDF fought gallantly for non-racial sports and its development.

Madiba is famously quoted saying, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else do. It speaks to youth in a language they understand”.

These words of wisdom still resonate with the reality the nation finds itself in and is a call to action to advance the values of the rainbow nation.

Sadly, the state and quality of sports in schools and in the low-income township and rural areas of our country, especially in the Northern Cape have deteriorated with little to no support from both the public and private sectors.

Access and participation in high-performance sports are still defined by privileges of race and class. Class includes the black middle class.

Sunday’s dialogue will reflect on these and many other issues with the objective of holding leaders in both the public and private sectors accountable for the lack of equitable development and the transformation of society into an inclusive rainbow nation.

A programme of action will then be developed for implementation.
