Hard work pays off for Karate students

THE ZEN Shotokan Karate Club recently returned from the 2023 Kanazawa Cup, held at the Tongaat Sports Centre in Durban. The tournament drew participants from various provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Cape, the North West, Mphumalanga, the Free State, the Eastern Cape, and Botswana.

The club brought all 35 of their dedicated students to the competition and they returned with a remarkable haul of 22 medals, earned through their exceptional performances in both Kata and Kumite.

The students were proud to show the DFA their achievements, adorning themselves with eight gold, 12 silver, and four bronze medals – a testament to their unwavering commitment and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Grateful for the opportunity to participate in the competition, Kyosih Sam Nkosi, the esteemed 7th dan black belt, acknowledged the indispensable support of the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture.

Their provision of transportation to Durban made this tournament a resounding success for the club.

“The club extends its heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Lesetedi, Patrick Lenyibe, and the dedicated driver, Biza Sikwe, for their invaluable contributions of time and effort. Their unwavering support ensured the realisation of this remarkable event for the club and its members,” Nkosi said.

The Karate club has been a pillar of the Galeshewe community for over six years, teaching the art of Karate. The club meets on the premises of Montshiwa Primary School, and currently instructs 35 students aged five to 18 years old.

However, this is no ordinary club; it has fostered the growth of four world champions, each making their mark in prestigious competitions around the globe. One student triumphed in Budapest, another in DisneyLand (USA), a third in England, and the fourth in Croatia.

Under the guidance of Kyosih Sam Nkosi, and supported by Sensei David Thebeyapelo, a skilled first dan black belt, the Zen Shotokan Karate Club imparts a holistic karate experience.

Their teachings encompass self-defence techniques, discipline, self-control, physical fitness, focus, concentration, stress relief, confidence, self-esteem, character development, and social interaction, among other invaluable qualities.
