THE SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has called on law enforcement agencies to act with speed in hunting down the perpetrator/s who gunned down Sol Plaatje foreman and Samwu shop steward Japhta Louw.

Louw was killed in a shooting outside his home in Jacksonville on Friday evening, where bullets were fired through the work vehicle that he was travelling in.

Louw had survived an attempt on his life earlier this year.

Louw was hospitalised after he was shot in July, not long after municipal employees were arrested for the theft of copper cables that they attempted to sell at a local scrap yard.

No suspects were arrested in connection with the first shooting.

Samwu provincial secretary Lawrence Fennie on Saturday called for justice to be served for Louw’s brutal murder.

“We urge law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in the hunt to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to book,” said Fennie.

He also extended his heartfelt condolences to Louw’s bereaved family, friends and colleagues.

“The family has been robbed of a provider. We thank the family for having borrowed him to us. Louw served municipal workers with distinction at Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, where he was also the longest serving shop steward in the cleansing section,” said Fennie.

“We wish strength and comfort to the family during this difficult time. Their loss is also a loss to many municipal workers whom Louw dedicated much of his time serving. His revolutionary spirit will forever remain in our hearts.”
