FINES exceeding R3,000 were issued during roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints that were conducted on the R357 and secondary roads during Operation Vhuthu Hawe in the Pixley ka Seme District.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said members of the De Aar Public Order Police and the De Aar K9 unit and Visible Policing members from Niekerkshoop and Hopetown searched 214 vehicles and 496 persons during the operation on September 15.

“A total of 146 vehicles were tested. Fines to the value of over R3,000 were issued to motorists for violating the Road Traffic Act,” said Tawana.

He stated that the driver of a Volkswagen Polo, who was searched during a roadblock on the R357, was found in possession of mandrax tablets and dagga. “He will face charges including the possession of drugs.”

Tawana said that compliance inspections were conducted at 18 second-hand goods dealers.

“Two wanted suspects were traced and put behind bars and three houses were raided for drugs,” he added.

“The suspects are expected to appear in the Douglas, Niekerkshoop and Hopetown magistrate’s courts respectively on various charges.”

The acting district commissioner of Pixley ka Seme, Brigadier Nomana Adonis, commended the police members for clamping down on criminal activities.
