THE STATE of the Province Address (Sopa) 2022 will take place at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington on Thursday, where 1,000 people are expected to attend under strict Covid-19 protocols.

Northern Cape Provincial Legislature Speaker Newrene Klaaste said that Premier Zamani Saul would outline the key priorities of the provincial government for the year ahead and report back to the community on previous commitments.

“This is an important and annual event. We encourage our community at large to tune into any of the eight local radio stations in our Province, or follow the proceedings on the NCPL and NCPG social media platforms advertised,” said Klaaste.

She added that members of the Northern Cape Council of Provinces, the business sector, the religious sector, government stakeholders and entities, municipal mayors and Speakers, and invitees from the political parties represented in the legislature would attend the sitting.

“The main cost drivers for this year are on items that will ensure that a wide number of people are reached in the comfort of their homes and through their electronic devices; this includes live streaming of the Sopa, live radio broadcast and telecommunication costs. Partnerships with some private institutions in the telecommunications industry also goes a long way in alleviating costs. The majority of the invited guests from different sectors will be accommodated on the virtual platform,” said Klaaste.

She added that the legislature strived to host rotational house sittings in the various districts of the Province, so as to bring the legislature closer to its people.

Klaaste said that the Sopa debate would take place on March 1, followed by the premier’s reply on the same day.
