MEMBERS of Operation Fiela destroyed a large stash of knives and home-made weapons that were confiscated during neighbourhood patrols and searches.
Anthony Kgobi from Operation Fiela said that the weapons were displayed to the public before they were destroyed at the Galeshewe circle on Friday.
“We confiscated home-made knives in Phomolong and Ipopeng. The other weapons were found in Soul City, Club 2000, Homevale, Homelite, Galeshewe, Lerato Park and Floors during street patrols and raids that were conducted since March this year. We did not want to hand over these weapons to the police. It was decided instead to destroy them to prevent them from finding their way back onto the streets and into the hands of thugs and gangsters. The remains of the weapons will be taken to the scrap yard on Monday,” said Kgobi.
He added that they had handed in a firearm to Witdam police station last month after they spotted a Zimbabwean national who had dropped the gun in the street and fled the scene.
“There was no ammunition in the firearm. We often find toy guns that are used to rob tuck shops.”
Kgobi stated that they returned a military uniform to the South African National Defence Force that was found at a house during a raid in Beaconsfield.
