A 29-YEAR-old man was handed down a life sentence after he was found guilty of raping his young sister at their parents’ home in Lime Acres.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the accused took advantage of his 15-year-old sister when their parents were not at home on March 13 last year.

“The accused was sentenced to life imprisonment on a count of rape by the Postmasburg Regional Court on September 15,” said Tawana.

“During court proceedings, it came to light that at about 11pm on the night in question the sister found her brother standing in the garage. He yelled at her as she approach him. He instructed her to go home and threatened her. The girl went home, put on her pyjamas and locked herself inside the bedroom before going to sleep. The accused arrived home and aggressively knocked on the bedroom door. He threatened to break the door down if she refused to open it.”

Tawana added that the accused forced his way into his sister’s bedroom when she opened the door. “He pushed her on the bed and raped her.”

Tawana stated that the accused was arrested and remained in police custody until the finalisation of his trial.

“The Postmasburg Regional Court also declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be registered in the National Register for Sex Offenders.”

The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Department of Justice for “taking a resolute stance by putting the accused in prison for life”.

“The sentence shall serve as a deterrent to those who perpetuate the scourge of gender-based violence and will restore the confidence of the public in the justice system,” said Otola.

She also commended the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Debora Bob, for her investigative work that resulted in the accused being sentenced to life behind bars.
