A 27-YEAR-old Northern Cape man was sentenced to eight years imprisonment after the Colesberg Regional Court convicted him of the attempted rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the incident took place on August 28, 2022, and the accused was sentenced on Wednesday this week.

“The court heard that the accused attempted to rape the teenager on Sunday evening, August 28, 2022. The teenager informed her sibling about the incident, who subsequently reported the incident to the police and the suspect was arrested,” said Shemane.

The court sentenced the man to eight years imprisonment and also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Shemane added that that sentence was welcomed by the provincial police management.

“The Northern Cape SAPS management welcomed the conviction and sentencing of the accused. The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, applauded the lengthy sentence that was handed down as it sends a message to perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide that any form of abuse will not be tolerated.”

Otola also commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Willy Issacs, for “ensuring that justice was served”.
