A 31-YEAR-old Olifantshoek man, David Vis, was sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment for raping his former girlfriend.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the incident occurred in March last year when Vis accosted the complainant and her boyfriend while they were on their way home.

“On March 18, 2022, the 24-year-old complainant was walking home with her boyfriend and they came across the accused, who was the former boyfriend of the complainant. The accused started insulting and assaulting the complainant. The complainant’s boyfriend at the time could not intervene because he had a fractured arm,” said Shemane.

“The accused then forcefully took the complainant to his shanty and raped her. She reported the incident and the suspect was arrested. Bail for the accused was successfully opposed and the accused remained in custody.

“The Kuruman Regional Court on Monday, September 18, 2023, sentenced the accused to 20 years direct imprisonment for rape and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm. The accused’s name will also be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders.”

Shemane added that the investigating officer was commended for his work on the case.

“The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the Kathu SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit and Sergeant Boikanyo Pilane for their meticulous investigative work and for making sure that the accused is convicted and sentenced accordingly.

“The fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) remains a priority for the police in the Province and we continue to address it.”
