THE ZF Mgcawu District highway patrol and border police arrested a suspected drug dealer after he was found in possession of dagga with an estimated street value of more than R86,000.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the suspect was arrested after he fled from the police.

“The police members were conducting their normal daily patrols along the N10 when they spotted a suspicious man at the Nakop crossing on Monday, June 19. As members were approaching the suspect, he ran into the veld and they chased after him on foot.

“The suspect threw away a backpack as he was running. The police caught up to the suspect and upon seizing the backpack, the police found a zip-lock bag containing dagga,” said Sam.

He explained further that the police obtained a search-and-seizure warrant and searched the suspect’s home in Rosedale, Upington.

“The police found 3.45 kilograms of dagga with an estimated street value of R86,225, as well as R2,240 cash that is believed to be the proceeds of drug sales,” said Sam.

He added that the suspect is expected to appear in court soon and the police members were commended for the arrest.

“The proliferation of drugs remains an operational priority to the police. Increased visibility as well as robust efforts to clamp down on the drug trade will continue unabated,” said Sam.
