A MAN accused of raping a woman in a dilapidated building in Jan Kempdorp has been sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment in the Jan Kempdorp regional court.

Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the accused Bongani Donald Rofuza, 22 was positively linked to the crime by DNA tests.

“The incident took place on at about 3.45am on October 16, 2016, when the 42-year-old woman was walking home from a tavern. The accused accosted her and dragged her to a dilapidated building in Jan Kempdorp and raped her.

“The accused was unknown to the victim. He fled the scene after raping her.

“The woman walked back to the tavern and informed her sister about the rape ordeal.”

He added that Rofuza was arrested in Jan Kempdorp after he was positively linked to the crime scene.

“The investigating officer Sergeant Sidwell Dastile from the Hartswater SAP Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS) successfully opposed bail and he remained in custody for the duration of the trial.

“The accused was found guilty of rape and was sentenced in the Jan Kempdorp regional court on May 12 to ten years direct imprisonment.”

Tawana stated that the court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be entered in the national register for sexual offenders.

The acting deputy provincial commissioner for Crime Detection Brigadier Nicky Mills welcomed the conviction and commended the investigating officer Sergeant Sidwell Dastile, the National Prosecuting Authority and Department of Justice for securing the sentence.
