THE GATES to the construction site of the Kimberley Nursing College student accommodation were shut on Tuesday morning as sub-contractors have not received payment.

The Department of Health had on Thursday, February 17 stated that it had paid the main contractor, where the money should have reflected in their bank account on Friday.

Sub-contractors claimed that the contractor had received R12 million from the Department of Health last week, but they had not received a cent.

Xcellent Contractors indicated that they were promised payment on February 18.

“On February 19 we were told that we would be paid and on Monday we decided to close the site to prevent anyone from entering until we have received payment that is amounting to millions of rand.

“We have done a lot of work without payment. The last payment was received in September last year and we are unable to pay our workers, who are struggling and are unable to provide for their families.

“No one will enter the site until we receive what is due to us. The police and officials from the Department of Health were on site this morning.”

Another sub-contractor stated that he was unable to remove his equipment from the site on Monday as the gates were closed.

The contractor could not be reached for comment.
