Accused sentenced to 12 years for murder over a glass of beer

THE REGIONAL Court in Upington has sentenced Hano Van Rooi, 22, to 12 years direct imprisonment for the murder of Jonny Salwan, 44 on 18 May 2022.

The murder happened on on the night of 22 January 2022 in Saltana Oord near Upington when the 2 were reportedly drinking together and ended up in an argument over a glass of home-brewed beer.

During the altercation the accused allegedly stabbed the deceased three times and ran away.

The docket was assigned to Sergeant Bahedile Nkwadipo who secured an arrest the following day.

The bail application was denied in court and Van Rooi remained in custody during the period of trial.

The Acting Station Commander of Upington, Colonel Gert Jobs commended the member for the meticulous investigation of the case.
