THE SOUTH African Police Service in the ZF Mcgawu District organised a soccer tournament last Friday that involved the SAPS team, a team from Correctional Services, an Army team (8SAI), and a local team, Upington FC.

The event was part of a larger programme aimed at fostering a positive relationship between law enforcement, the community, NGOs, and various government departments in the fight against crime.

Prior to the tournament, the programme began with visits to AJ Ferreira High School and Paballelo High School, where Lieutenant Colonel Elizabeth Bacela, the Acting Vispol Head of ZF Mgcawu District, spoke to learners about general safety, bullying, and dropouts.

Other departments, including Correctional Services, Social Development, GCIS, the Department of Education, NGOs, and CPF, were also part of the programme.

Mr Du Preez, the Area Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, spoke to learners about life in prison and how to avoid becoming a statistic. The learners were provided with dignitary bags to promote self-care and dignity, particularly among girls.

After the school visits, the tournament kicked off at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs stadium, where stalls were erected for services from different departments.

At the end of the day Upington FC won the tournament, followed by SAPS in second place and 8SAI in third place, although it can be said that everyone who was reached by the tournament and its programmes ultimately won.
