Cuan remains in our hearts as a sportsman who embraced challenges and a friend who enriched our lives with his indomitable spirit. His memory will forever inspire us – The Young Collegians Rugby Football Club.

On behalf of the entire Young Collegians Rugby Football Club, we convey our deepest sympathies to the extended Hartzenberg family. Our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support are with you during this time of profound sorrow and mourning.

Today, we unite to honour the cherished memory of Cuan, affectionately known as Chunky or Gora, whose legacy remains etched in the collective memories of our club members.

Cuan’s incredible achievements, unwavering dedication, and remarkable sportsmanship are a testament to his enduring legacy – an icon whose departure has left an irreplaceable void, not just in the sporting realm but in the tapestry of life itself.

His journey with the club commenced in the early 1970s, transitioning swiftly from the second team to the first team. Known for his unyielding spirit and expertise in the ‘dark arts’ on the field, Cuan’s commitment during practice sessions resonates in the minds of those who witnessed his tenacity.

His resilience, coupled with his unflagging devotion to his teams, remains an invaluable lesson etched in our club’s history.

His towering presence in the Maroon, Black, and White Hoops of the Young Collegians Club symbolised his leadership, notably as the formidable No.2 line-out jumper. His exceptional prowess without assistance in reaching phenomenal heights was a testament to his unparalleled skill.

In recalling his tenacity and addressing disciplinary issues, Cuan resolved matters discreetly, eschewing the dramatics often associated with modern ‘enforcers’. His mastery of the ‘dark arts’ remained shrouded in mystery yet recognised by all – a bold testament to his skill and audacity.

Representing Griquas in their peacock blue and white hoops, Cuan exhibited unflinching courage. His role in the 1973 Griqua team that battled Western Province in the SA Cup final was a testament to his sterling reputation. Even rugby legend Peter Jooste’s remarks, suggesting Griquas needed Cuan to become a formidable force, echoed his unparalleled prowess.

Beyond the sports arena, Cuan’s legacy transcends. As a Young Collegian Legend and Griqua Stalwart, he was a friend, mentor, and community activist, embodying a rare blend of fortitude on the field and warmth off it. His karaoke performances, a delightful experience for those fortunate enough to witness them, showcased his joyous spirit.

As we bid our final farewells, Cuan remains in our hearts as a sportsman who embraced challenges and a friend who enriched our lives with his indomitable spirit. His memory will forever inspire us.

In closing, we share this anonymous quote: “May you gaze down from the heavens upon the fields you once graced, knowing the lives you’ve touched and the enduring legacy you’ve left behind. May God commend your accomplishments.”

Rest peacefully, Chunky Gora.
