DURING this month and next month, the South African Under-20 rugby side, fondly known as the Junior Springboks, will take on some formidable competition in the fairest Cape.

The World Rugby Under-20 Championship is scheduled to take place from June 24 to July 14 across three venues in the Western Cape: the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch, Paarl Gimnasium in Paarl and the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town will see the Junior Boks face off against Georgia, Italy, and Argentina in their pool.

As exciting as the prospect of having junior international rugby being played right on our doorstep, what is even more thrilling is the fact that one of Kimberley’s own sons will be part of the Under-20 Bok team.

Regan Izaks, a talented 20-year-old athlete from the Diamond City, has been named as one of the Springboks outside backs.

Izaks’ sporting journey began at a young age, when he already showed exceptional promise in both rugby and cricket. From the age of seven, he actively participated in various sports and frequently accompanied his father, a former number six flank for the renowned Universal Rugby Football club, to rugby games.

Regan made his way through the ranks and his first taste of provincial rugby came during the Spur Under-12 tournament held in Vryheid, where he showcased his exceptional ability on the rugby field. But during the same period, he also captained the Under-13 Griqua cricket team, where he also received several awards.

His exceptional rugby performances were, however, noted, and this led to his selection for the Craven Week Under-13 Griquas team, where he was his team’s vice-captain and earned the prestigious title of Player of the Year.

Impressed by his outstanding abilities, Grey College offered Izaks a full bursary to study and play in their school colours. He continued to excel, playing as a flyhalf for the Grey Under-14 team, and was selected twice by the Free State to compete in the Grant Komo Week. In his first appearance, Izaks became the youngest player ever to compete in the Grant Komo, and in his second year, he was appointed vice-captain of the team.

Following his successes at the Grant Komo tournament, Izaks was selected to join the High Performance Squad in Cape Town, a significant milestone in his career. In January 2021, he signed a two-year contract with the Blue Bulls, further establishing his credentials as a rising star in South African rugby.

Unfortunately, during a crucial North and South Tournament in his matric year, Izaks suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, sidelining him for 11 months. The setback greatly affected his mental state, as rugby had become his passion and part of his identity. However, with the unwavering support of his family and coaches, he persevered, driven by the prospect of a triumphant return to the field.

And it happened, when Izaks made a remarkable comeback and continued to represent the Bulls during his Under-19 and Under-20 years. His dedication and determination paid off this year, when he was called up to the Junior Springbok World Cup squad as an outside back.

Currently studying sports science, the young man exemplifies the perfect balance between academics and athletics.

Izaks’ father, Reggie Pitt, expressed his pride and joy for his son’s accomplishments. Pitt acknowledged the significance of this achievement, not only for Regan but also for the people of Kimberley and other small communities like Homevale. Pitt emphasised that this opportunity demonstrated that anything is possible through hard work and dedication.

As Regan Izaks prepares to compete on the international stage, his parents and family stand by him with unwavering support. Their attendance at all his World Cup matches will clearly demonstrate the depth of their pride and belief in his abilities.

The young speedster’s selection to represent the Junior Springboks is not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the talent and determination found in smaller communities.

His journey serves as an inspiration to young athletes, proving that with passion, resilience, and dedicated support, dreams can be realised. As the World Cup approaches, Kimberley, Homevale, and South Africa eagerly await the opportunity to witness Izaks’ sporting prowess and celebrate his remarkable achievements.
