THE TEAM known as Kimberley Real Madrid has changed its name to Diamond City FC following a directive from the SA Football Association and the ABC Motsepe League broadcasters and sponsors who requested the change of name in keeping with international intellectual property regulations.

Diamond City FC representative and events manager Jerry Kale on Thursday said the change was requested due to the likelihood of a possible infringement of patent and or copyright should the club continue to be referred to as Real Madrid.

Kale explained that the broadcasters had pointed out to the club the risks to them and the club of continuing to use the old name. “The club chairman Winston Moyahi confirmed that the club will no longer use the name Kimberley Real Madrid for the new ABC Motsepe League.

“The club will use the name ‘Diamond City Football Club’. The name is to identify with the city where the club originates – Kimberley; which is also known as the ‘Diamond City’.

“The previous name created challenges when the team played nationally because there is already a team in Spain with the same name,” he said.

Kale further said the current champions of the ABC Motsepe League in the province are still committed to playing exciting football in a quest to gain promotion to the Motsepe Foundation’s Championship League.

The team will play all its home games at the South African Defence Force sports fields, aka Diskobolos, south-east of the Kimberley CBD.
