Kelly crowned Under-30 Masters Champion

Kieran Kelly (17) of the Beaconsfield Bowling Club was crowned champion after five rounds of play.

KIMBERLEY Town Bowling Club, the second oldest bowls club in the country after St Georges Park in Qeberha, hosted 12 of the best Under-30 players in the Northern Cape in the Diamond City last weekend.

Public relations co-ordinator for the event Jacques Swanepoel, said this time around the field was made out of both men and women from all over the province with travellers coming from as far as Upington.

Swanepoel said the Kimberley Town Bowling Club was established in 1891 “and these young bowlers, some as young as sixteen years of age, came to add their name to the rich history found at the venue.

“The event was also live streamed and videos of games are available on social media pages where interested persons can like the pages and learn more about the sport of lawn bowls.”

Kieran Kelly (17) of the Beaconsfield Bowling Club was crowned champion after five rounds of play. Kelly eliminated the defending champion and current Northern Cape Singles champion Driaan van Niekerk of Warrenton in the semi-final rounds.

Kelly also beat Le Roux Fourie of Upington Bowls Club 21-16 in a thrilling final. “Kieran now adds the title of Under-30 Masters (champion) to his record which includes winning gold in the Bowls South Africa Under-15 National junior tournament.

Kelly will be hoping to repeat his accomplishment later this year when he plays in the Under-20 national championship which is scheduled for Bloemfontein at the end of March.
