AFRICA Genesis Archery Northern Cape (AGA-NC) held its inter-school/inter-club competition recently, with 37 archers from Kimberley and Bloemfontein competing.

The competition was hosted by Adventure Archery Club and held at the newly-founded AGA-NC Vooruitsig Primary School Club’s range at Vooruitsig Primary School.

While archers competed for first place in each category, the mood, according to Dawid de Greeff, administrative officer of AGA-NC, was electrifying.

The competition between archers was keen and the skill levels were of high quality, with the best archers having scores that were quite close to one another, and in some cases, the difference between gold, silver, and bronze had to be decided by the number of ‘10s’ hit.

Odette Victor was the overall female winner with 270/300 and 12 tens, and Philip Kotze was awarded overall best male, and overall best in the competition with 280/300 and a whopping 17 tens.

This week, AGA-NC learned of changes to the AGA-SA national teams. Tyra Adams was promoted to the National Junior Team, and another Northern Cape archer, Haajirah Hunter, a student at the Northern Cape High School in Kimberley, was added to the National Development Team.

These two teams will compete physically in South Africa in July when Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, and Canada are visiting.

Given how new the Northern Cape is to the sport, the accomplishments of these three provincial archers are incredible, according to de Greeff. According to de Greeff, this unexpected achievement also presents great financial challenges to the parents of these archers and AGA-NC.

For each archer to realise their ambition of playing against the aforementioned international teams and earning a spot on our national teams, a minimum of R10,000 is needed. Tyra Adams, Nurah Isaacs, and Haajirah Hunter are the three Northern Cape archers who will represent the Northern Cape and South Africa at the next international competition.

In order for young archers to realise their aspirations of competing in the forthcoming international tournament, Archery Northern Cape is appealing to businesses and financial partners to please get in touch with Dawid at [email protected] or by calling 073 030 2909 for additional information.
