THE HIGHLY-anticipated 2023 Absa Wildeklawer Schools Sport Tournament has finally arrived, and the organisers have been putting in a lot of effort to ensure its success.

Janco Steenkamp, the promoter of Diamantveld High School, recently spoke to the DFA and highlighted the various arrangements that have been made for the tournament.

Steenkamp emphasised that the success of the tournament depends on meticulous planning and execution, saying that the organisers have been busy since Monday morning setting up the ABSA and beer tents, as well as pavilions for spectators.

In one of the significant changes to the format of the tournament, this year, the Under-14 and Under-15 rugby games will be played at Boys’ High School. In fact, all the high school rugby games will take place around the Honoured Dead Memorial. A kiosk has been set up at Boys’ High for the convenience of spectators.

In previous years, parents had to travel from Diamantveld to Newton Primary to watch the Under-14s and Under-15s in action. The Under-16 and Under-19 games will be played at Diamantveld.

Steenkamp further revealed that this year’s media station and media team are bigger than previous years. They have set up a large team to keep score updates for every game being played each day, a significant improvement over past tournaments.

The organisers have also taken great care to ensure the safety of all attendees with ER24 Paramedics to be stationed all around the premises in case of any injuries, and Mediclinic will play a big role this year, with a Mediclinic infirmary to be set up at the school, with a doctor and nurse available to attend to any injuries.

The organisers have also gone the extra mile, arranging accommodation for 400 to 500 learners at the Deo Gloria Guesthouse.

Meanwhile, the Diamantveld food tent will provide food and drinks to all the tournament attendees, with both cash and card payments accepted.

Spectators can expect to pay R60 per ticket at the gate for adults and R30 per child. Children in school uniform will be granted free admission.

Steenkamp stressed that all the planning and hard work were done to provide the best tournament possible. The organisers hope that everything will run smoothly and that the 2023 Absa Wildeklawer will long be remembered as a resounding success.
