“YOUNG women should not make excuses for taking up their rightful space.”

This was the advice from the deputy leader of Build One South Africa (Bosa), Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster, who recently addressed businesswomen in Kimberley, as well as young girls at Roodepan High School and elderly women in Ritchie.

Hlazo-Webster said the two-day event was not only to commemorate Women’s Month but also to encourage women, young and old, to rise up and “take up space” in their respective areas.

“We have programmes across the country. The aim of the programmes is to encourage women to take up leadership in their respective societies. Women are already leading and we need to implant that mindset into our younger generation. Our elderly community has shown and paved the way for the younger generation,” said Hlazo-Webster.

“They have passed the baton on and have shown the younger generation how women have taken the front line when it comes to leadership. Our grandmothers are sterling examples of how households flourished even though there were no male figures to assist in some households.

“We need to learn from the elderly women who boldly made a difference in their communities and living circumstances. The younger generation can learn from the wisdom and skills of how the older generation overcame the challenges we are facing today.”

Hlazo-Webster added that the event also aimed to create a bond between the elderly and the youth.
