THE “WOMEN Changing Lives” movement, which was initiated by ladies from the Aldersgate Methodist soup kitchen through the “Love in Action” group, launched a dignity drive on Women’s Day.
The organiser, Soraya Crowie, who brainstormed the project two weeks ago, said she collected donations from acquaintances, friends and family members.
“Individual women who want to improve the lives of other women contributed in cash and kind – where we filled 130 bags,” said Crowie.
She added that they handed out 60 dignity packs to residents living in the Floors shanties.
“Kimberley Girl Guides assisted in collecting 45 dignity packs and spent the morning assisting.
“The girl guides wrote personalised messages on each of the packs with words of encouragement. The dignity packs contained toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and sanitary products.”
Crowie stated that they managed to provide meals for 130 people and handed out tickets where ladies could browse and “shop” for clothes and shoes.
She added that they intend to hand out dignity packs to beneficiaries in Floors and surrounding areas on the first Wednesday of every month.
“Everyone is welcome to get involved. The intention is to expand this project to all soup kitchens where there is a real need.”
She explained that the project was based on a model utilising available networks to help others.
“If more people are involved, more people can receive assistance in more areas. It is heartbreaking to turn people away as we just don’t have enough food to go around.
“This project is intended to uplift women and restore their dignity as many women are unable to afford sanitary products.”
