THREE foreign nationals were arrested by the Calvinia police after they were found in possession of drugs with an estimated street value of R193,000.

Calvinia police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hantie Houghton-Hawksley said the suspects were arrested during night patrol activities conducted by the local police.

“Members of the Calvinia Police Task Team were busy with night patrol duties on the R27 in the direction of Nieuwoudtville when they noticed a vehicle standing next to the road. As they approached the vehicle, a suspect jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the veld. The members found three male foreign nationals inside the vehicle. The members searched the occupants as well as the vehicle and found tik, mandrax and dagga in the possession of the male occupants. The drugs have an estimated street value of R193,000,” said Houghton-Hawksley.

Houghton-Hawksley added that the vehicle and the drugs were seized and the suspects were charged.

“The members confiscated the vehicle as it was allegedly used in a crime. The suspects will appear in the local magistrate’s court soon.

“The Namakwa district commander, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, expressed his appreciation towards the members for their unabated efforts in the community and it is a sign that the police will fight hard against crime this festive season.”
