THE GALESHEWE Magistrate’s Court was packed to capacity earlier this week when 18-year-old murder accused Jemaine Long made another bail appearance in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Toma Raadt.

Raadt was fatally stabbed in front of his home in Santa Zone 2, Galeshewe, on Saturday, April 29.

According to preliminary investigations, an 18-year-old male suspect was involved in an argument with a female who lived in the same street.

The suspect went to his home to fetch a knife and when he returned he allegedly stabbed a bystander who was standing in front of his yard.

Raadt died on his way to the hospital after an ambulance failed to arrive.

Long was arrested by the police after he was attacked by an angry mob. The mob also torched his home.

Community members have been picketing at court since Long’s first court appearance, opposing bail.

They vowed to take the law into their own hands if Long was released on bail.

On Wednesday, Long abandoned his bail application out of concern for his own safety.

After his first bail hearing in May, Long was referred for psychological observation.

A report is pending for referral by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), according to Section 77 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The case was postponed until September 18 for the DPP’s decision.
