“We are grateful for the witnesses who decided to go to the police and give statements on the incident. We cannot let evil prevail as we sit back and watch our streets being taken over”

THE FAMILY of the 33-year-old woman that was so badly assaulted that she sustained memory loss, are elated that her 19-year-old alleged attacker has been arrested.

Priscilla Kaats suffered severe head injuries and memory loss when she was viciously attacked on Tuesday, December 10, 2019.

Kaats was apparently assaulted at a shebeen.

According to Kaats, she recalls nothing about the attack and only remembers waking up in hospital later that night.

The Galeshewe police said that a 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following the incident.

Kaats’ family had previously complained that the justice system had failed them, after they were told that the matter could not be prosecuted as the victim had no recollection of the incident and that there were no witnesses to provide statements on the event.

The Community Policing Forum chairperson for Sector 8, Anna Bogacwe, said yesterday that she is happy that the community decided to stand up and that witnesses have come forth.

“We are grateful for the witnesses who decided to go to the police and give statements on the incident. We cannot let evil prevail as we sit back and watch our streets being taken over. This incident is very heartbreaking and could have happened to any one of our children, mothers or sisters. We need to hold hands as communities and show criminals that we will not allow them to steal our peace. We need to stand up for each other and also protect the vulnerable in our communities,” said Bogacwe.

She added that she hoped that the perpetrator will be dealt with speedily.

“The police have done their part and it is now in the hands of the courts. We hope the law will run its course and justice will prevail. We have seen many cases being scrapped from the roll due to minor discrepancies and are praying his matter will not follow the same fate.”

She also urged the community to support the family during the suspect’s court appearance.
