A NORTHERN Cape man who was found guilty of raping a 23-year-old woman in Boichoko was sentenced to 21 years and six months behind bars by the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomvuyo Makaloi said the man, Mothusiemang Ernest Moemedi, 38, had insisted on accompanying the 23-year-old complainant while she was on her way home after visiting her sister in Boichoko on July 31, 2021, at about 9.30pm.
“Three streets away from her sister’s house the accused accosted and raped her in his shack the entire night. He released her in the morning, after which she reported the incident to the police,” said Makaloi.
She added that Moemedi was arrested on August 2, 2021 and remained in custody until he was sentenced.
Makoloi said that Moemedi was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for rape, three years for kidnapping and six months for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm by the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court on September 13.
The acting commander of Postmasburg police station, Captain Gerrit Mouton, congratulated the shift members of D Relief and the investigating officer from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, Detective Constable Boitshepo Bele, for having worked “tirelessly” in ensuring that Moemedi was convicted.
