Rapist sentenced to 10 years in prison

The Springbok Regional Court handed down a 10-year prison sentence to 33-year-old man for raping a 30-year-old woman in Skietbank location, Okiep.

THE SPRINGBOK Regional Court handed down a 10-year prison sentence to 33-year-old Franco Swartz for the assault and rape of a 30-year-old woman in Skietbank location, Okiep.

The incident took place on March 8, 2023.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said on Tuesday that Swartz was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape, two years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and six months for common assault.

“The sentences will run concurrently. The accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered in the national sex offenders register. The police will ensure that gender-based violence and femicide survivors are protected and feel safe,” said Sam.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Agnes Vena, for ensuring that the perpetrator was brought to book.
