SEVERAL suspects are expected to appear in the Vanwyksvlei, Carnarvon and Douglas magistrate’s courts soon after they were arrested in the Pixley ka Seme District on charges ranging from stock theft, dealing in drugs and dealing in illicit cigarettes.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the suspects were apprehended over the weekend during high-police-visibility operations.
“Members of the De Aar Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit acted tactically following a complaint of stock theft in Vanwyksvlei and put three suspects behind bars on a count of stock theft,” said Tawana.
He added that four tuck shop owners were charged with dealing in illicit cigarettes during Operation Vhuthu Hawe compliance inspections that were conducted at several tuck shops in Carnarvon.
“Six suspects are facing charges of dealing in dagga and drugs following their arrests in Breipaal in Douglas. The suspects were found at two different residences in possession of mandrax tablets, dagga weighing 22.2 kilograms and cash believed to be the proceeds of drug dealing.”
Tawana said that dangerous weapons were confiscated during stop-and-search operations.
“Fifteen suspects were arrested and charged for riotous behaviour and drinking in public,” he added.
“All arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Vanwyksvlei, Carnarvon and Douglas magistrate’s courts, respectively, soon.”
The acting district commissioner of Pixley ka Seme, Brigadier Nomana Adonis, commended the operational members across the district for their “relentless efforts” in curbing crime throughout the region.
