Parolee convicted for attempted rape

A 53-year-old man was sentenced to 15 year in prison after he was convicted for the attempted rape of his 39-year-old cousin in Victoria West.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said the incident occurred on August 27, 2022 while the victim was making her way home.

“On August 27, 2022 at approximately 8pm, the victim was on her way home when she was accosted by the accused. He grabbed her from behind, forcefully tried to undress her and beat her with a stone.

“A passer-by witnessed the incident and came to the rescue of the victim, causing the accused to flee. The accused was still on parole for another matter and was arrested by police.

“He was sentenced on March 3, 2023 in the Victoria West Regional Court.”

Kock added the sentence was welcomed and the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Vallerie Booysen was applauded for the investigation into the matter.

“The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Ofences (FCS), Brigadier Sipho Kheswa, applauded Warrant Officer Booysen, from the De Aar FCS Unit, for her relentless efforts in securing the sentence. Kheswa also commended the community member who came to the assistance of the victim.”
