A 31-year-old man, Amogelang Sehulang, was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment after he was found guilty on a charge of house robbery in the Upington Regional Court.

Upington police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela, said the accused was convicted after robbing a 70-year-old woman at her home.

“On October 3, 2021 at approximately 10am, the accused entered the residence, which is situated in Die Rand area while the 70-year-old woman was alone. He tied her up and demanded the keys to the safe. He took everything in the safe, including cash.

“While the accused was still busy in the house, a family member of the victim arrived and he (the accused) ran out of the house. The accused was later found hiding in the neighbour’s outside toilet.

“He was arrested after he was found in possession of the stolen items, excluding the cash. He was charged and remained in custody until his trial,” Masegela said.

“The docket was assigned to Sergeant Vuyani Silingile. The Acting District Commissioner of ZF Mgcawu, Brigadier Peet Coetzee, commended the investigating officer for a job well done,” Masegela said.
