THE AFRICAN Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has welcomed national government’s intervention in the Warrenton water crisis after Magareng Municipality failed once again to restore the town’s water supply.

That is after the announcement that a R5,145,435 allocation has been approved by the Municipal Disaster Response Grant in the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), for flood intervention measures in Warrenton.

The project that Magareng Municipality has prioritised for this allocation is the restoration of the main water supply pipeline that connects the water treatment plant on the western side of the Vaal River and the water supply areas in Warrenton.

Warrenton has been without a proper allocation of water for four months.

The community has since lodged a case with the Human Right’s Commission as they accuse the municipality of lacking the commitment to complete the repairs at the water treatment plant.

The community regards the situation as a humanitarian crisis, whereby their dignity and basic human rights are being violated by the state.

Coghsta announced this week that the water will only be restored in July.

That is after the municipality made promises to ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe that the water will be restored by June 10.

The ACDP, on behalf of the Warrenton community, has submitted a petition to Parliament, seeking the urgent restoration of water to the area.
