Pageant prince wins modelling titles

Class of 2020 Kimberley Boys’ High School pupil Linathi Makawu, 20, was voted in as the runner up at the Mr World International Global modelling competition that was held in Bali, Indonesia on August 31.

He also won a string of other competitions including Mr Northern Cape in September 2021 and Mr Gauteng as well as a a modelling competition in Dubai. Mr North West in 2021, a Mr Universe competition in Johannesburg and Mr Photogenic at the Royal Snow King competition in July 2022.

He is a second Bachelor of Commerce degree student at the University of Pretoria, majoring in Economics.

Makawu was the only entrant from South Africa.

He stated that he intends to enter Mr South Africa next year.

“I will have to prepare myself mentally and I intend signing up with an agency. ”

He indicated that he managed to juggle his modelling career and studies through time management.

“Travelling and studying can be time consuming and overwhelming at the same time. Once I complete my studies, I would love to pursue a career in the Economics and perhaps combine it with the fashion world in designing and content creation. ”

He believed that he would not have been able to achieve his goals without his mother’s support.

“From an early age she always encouraged me to pursue my passions and made me believe that I could do anything that I put my mind to. She has always been my biggest cheerleader and made many sacrifices so that I could achieve my dreams.”

His mother Regina Makawu stated that as a retired single mother of two, she had confidence in her sons talents.

“I noticed that he was interested in modelling from an early age. It was worth every cent that I saved up for air tickets for my son to travel and compete overseas as well as locally and internationally. He is very bright and achieved three distinctions in matric. I also managed to put my oldest son through university. He is currently working in Pretoria.”
