THE ANC provincial executive committee (PEC) in the Northern Cape has put its weight behind ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa to serve a second term.

ANC provincial spokesperson Thabo Mothibi pointed out that while he was not sanctioned to elaborate on the Phala Phala farmgate controversies, the PEC would not make any pronouncements until formal charges were made against Ramaphosa.

He also waved off rumours that the PEC had put forward the name of ANC provincial chairperson Dr Zamani Saul to fill the position of ANC secretary-general.

“We accept that his political talents are overwhelmingly appreciated but for now our ANC provincial chairperson and premier, Dr Zamani Saul, will stay put.”

ANC provincial secretary Deshi Ngxanga said a meeting was convened on September 16, ahead of the upcoming national elective conference that will be held in December, to elect the top six national leadership positions.

“During the 9th ANC provincial conference that took place in June 2021, delegates representing all branches of the ANC in the Northern Cape unanimously resolved to support the current president, Cyril Ramaphosa, to serve a second term.”

He added that the PEC had decided not to endorse a particular slate but would allow ANC branches to decide on the most suitable candidate for each position.

He stated that the PEC had nominated Paul Mashatile, Oscar Mabuyane, Ronald Lamola, David Mabuza, Senzo Mchunu and Mmamoloko Kubayi for deputy president.

“For secretary-general the PEC is recommending Gwen Ramokgopa, Fikile Mbalula and Febe Potgieter-Gqubule. For the position of deputy secretary-general we have submitted the names of Febe Potgieter-Gqubule, Vuyiswa Tulelo and Maropene Ramokgopa for consideration by the branches.”

Ngxanga added that they suggested the names of Ronald Lamola and Stan Mathabatha for treasurer-general and Gwede Mantashe as the national chairperson.
