THE NORTHERN Cape Business Chamber of Youth (NCBCY) will stage a march in Kimberley against “incompetent” MECs and HODs whom they believe should step down.

The chairperson of the NCBCY, Freddy Moncho, pointed out that certain heads of departments should retire as they were past pensionable age.

“We have HODs who are highly incompetent and not fit to co-ordinate critical departments. We also call for the removal of the MEC who cannot even read properly, let alone lead a strategic department. We will be marching to different MECs who don’t deserve their occupations,” said Moncho.

He also called for the arrest of suspects implicated in the personal protective equipment (PPE) tender scandal.

“A businessman was paid R27 million for PPE tenders that were awarded by the Department of Health, where an HOD and chief financial officer were implicated. We are calling for the suspension of these officials,” said Moncho.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Tebogo Thebe said no arrests had been made yet in connection with the PPE matter as investigations were still ongoing.

“The investigation relates to a specific department that we do not wish to disclose at this stage,” said Thebe.

The Hawks in the Northern Cape, in collaboration with the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), obtained a preservation order last week, of a combined value of R5.3 million, against government officials who are alleged to have been involved in the procurement of PPE.

A piece of land/erf valued at R2.5 million and a Bentley Continental GT belonging to a businessman worth R2.8 million formed part of the preserved assets.
