THE KIMBERLEY Action Group will convene another community meeting at the Galeshewe circle at 5pm on Tuesday, June 27 to discuss the way forward regarding the 15 percent electricity increase that will be introduced as from July 1.

Community members and local businesses feel that the new tariffs have been steam-rolled through without proper consultation.

A group of community representatives wanted to hand over a petition to Sol Plaatje Municipality on Monday, but were informed that they were being “insensitive” following the deaths of the driver and the bodyguard of the Speaker, who died in a car accident near Christiana on June 25 while they were en route to fetch her in Johannesburg.

Boyce Makodi, from Kimberley Action Group, pointed out that while they were sympathetic towards the grieving officials and family members, service delivery could not come to a standstill.

“With less than three days to go before the increases will come into effect, the Office of the Mayor needs to attend to the grievances of the community as a matter of urgency,” said Makodi.

The memorandum was eventually handed over to the personal assistant of the municipal manager.

Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said that the electricity increases would only be implemented after all consultation processes were concluded.
