A Northern Cape man who was found guilty of raping a 26-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mothibistad Regional Court
AN ACCUSED, Steven Kaotsane, 39, who was found guilty of raping a 26-year-old woman, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mothibistad Regional Court on Tuesday.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said Kaotsane remained in police custody until the trial was finalised.
“The incident took place on December 16, 2019, when the 26-year-old complainant and her cousin were at a local tavern in Mothibistad. The accused offered them a lift to Promise Land, near Wrenchville and Magojaneng. However, the accused only dropped off the complainant’s cousin in Promise Land. He promised to drop her off at Magojaneng but instead drove into a nearby veld where he raped her repeatedly and proceeded to his residence where he also raped her,” said Tawana.
He added that the complainant managed to escape and reported the matter to the police.
Tawana stated that Kaotsane was sentenced on February 22.
“The court declared him unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be recorded in the national sexual offenders register.”
The Northern Cape police management praised the investigating officer, Sergeant Boikanyo, and the National Prosecuting Authority and the Department of Justice for securing the life sentence.
