A NORTHERN Cape man, Tebogo Olyn, 27, was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old girl by the Mothibistad Regional Court on Wednesday.

Olyn was found guilty and sentenced for two counts of rape.

Warrant Officer Keitumetse Semetsa, from the Kuruman SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, was applauded for her “excellent investigative work” that led to the conviction and sentencing of Olyn.

The incident occurred on May 21, 2014, when Olyn visited the victim’s family.

He went to the victim’s bedroom. He touched her in an “uncomfortable manner” and forced himself on her.

He did this on two occasions and threatened the victim not to tell anyone about the incidents.

The victim could not tolerate the abuse anymore and informed her mother about the rape ordeal.

During the court proceedings, it emerged that Olyn was a close family friend and that they did not suspect that he could rape or commit any crime against the victim.

On the first occasion, he raped the victim while her father was busy outside doing some repairs on a vehicle.

The Northern Cape provincial FCS head, Brigadier Nicky Mills, applauded Semetsa, the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority for ensuring that Olyn was removed from society and incarcerated.

The Mothibistad Regional Court also declared Olyn unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be recorded in the National Sexual Offenders Register.
