THE MEC for Education, Zolile Monakali has settled the Eskom account at Nico Bekker Intermediate School in Williston that is in arrears to the amount of R73,000.

Community members closed the school down earlier this month and requested the MEC to resolve the challenges that they were confronted with.

Spokesperson for the Department of Education Geoffrey van der Merwe said the school had been without electricity supply for the past five months, due to cable theft at the school.

“The department has since appointed a contractor to restore the electricity supply to the school, in order for normal learning and teaching to continue in a conducive environment.”

Van der Merwe added that the department had settled the outstanding account with Eskom amounting to R73,000.

“The MEC will engage with the school governing body and school management team of Nico Bekker Intermediate School on the progress made to date.”

Monakail will also hand over 14 mobile classrooms at Hantam High School in Calvinia on August 30, following the closure of the school due to infrastructure related challenges.

Van der Merwe said a section of the school was declared unsafe and had been cordoned off.

“The department committed to procure 14 mobile classrooms to accommodate all pupils, that will be delivered before the end of August.”
