THE POLICE have opened an inquest into the death of a 54-year-old man who died after collapsing and vomiting blood in Newtown, Galeshewe on Wednesday.

Galeshewe police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said preliminary investigations indicated that the man was walking down Moroka Street when he started vomiting blood.

“He collapsed on the corner of Moroka and North Avenue streets,” said Sam. “Kimberley emergency services personnel certified him dead on the scene. Police investigations are continuing.”

Sam requested anyone who could assist in the investigation of the case to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Stephen Wax, at 082 469 1728 or via the MySAPS app.

“All information will be treated confidentially,” Sam added.

In a separate incident in Ritchie on Tuesday, a 51-year-old man collapsed and died on his way to work.

The police said that the man, who was found lying in the street in front of Rietvale High School in Ritchie, had died of natural causes.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said several community members, including a resident nurse from the nearby clinic, tried to provide medical assistance to the 51-year-old man.

“The man was apparently still breathing at the time. He, however, died on the scene before the paramedics arrived. The deceased is believed to have suffered from hypertension. No foul play is suspected,” said Kock.
