KIMBERLEY DJ and radio presenter KG Smallz has been nominated in the prestigious ‘Song of the Year’ category for the renowned Metro FM Music Awards.

His nomination is for his latest song “Yes God”, which was released in November 2023 and has been making waves in the music industry. The song is a collaboration with Oscar Mbo and Dearson.

KG Smallz (real name Kgotso Potsane), who has been a part of the music industry for over two decades, is competing against nine other prominent artists in the awards category. He expressed immense pride and optimism about the nomination.

The Metro FM Music Awards nominations feature singles and albums released between February 28, 2023, and February 28, 2024. This year, the station received over 1 700 entries across various categories.

KG Smallz shared with the DFA that the song “Yes God” was inspired by his “survival” after enduring the most challenging time of his life, particularly during the Covid-19 period. He created the song as a token of gratitude following his recovery from severe depression.

“I was thanking God that he actually came through for me. That is why I came up with the song ‘Yes God’,” said KG Smallz.

After the song’s release, about 10 renowned artists joined the project, including Kapza the Small, Bee-Bar, Chymamusique, Cocosa, C-Blak Mashed Up, Da Vynalist, Kelvin Momo, SGVO, Mörda, Takzin and Mhaw Keys.

“It was so nice because after releasing the original, a lot of people came through and wanted to be part of the project.”

KG Smallz appealed to his fans, supporters and the entire country to help make his dream a reality by voting for him. He expressed his desire to be the first artist to bring the Metro FM Song of the Year Award “home”, emphasising that it is the most significant category.

“I really need this award because it is my pride to fly our flag high. I will be the first artist to bring the Metro FM Song of the Year Award home.

“It is the biggest category in the country. So I would really appreciate it if people can support me in order to bring this award home.”

“You can vote as many times as you want.”

He added that he is not nervous or fearful about the results and will accept any outcome.

Initially, he had hoped to be nominated in three categories: Best Dance Album, Best Music Video and Best Song of the Year. However, he was nominated in the “biggest” category and is hopeful for the best.

“There is a reason why God secured me a spot on this one. Due to it being the biggest category, I know that anything is possible and anything can happen. I am very optimistic about this award.”

He said that he is working with his brothers Teboho Potsane and Hloni, along with Dj Spanky, Kenneth and Kevin van Wyk (One Man Pixel Production & Design) and The Copy Mart, to ensure that the award is brought home.

KG Smallz concluded by saying that the nomination is a career highlight and he expressed excitement about reaching this stage of his career.

“This is a highlight of my career. I have been dreaming about this throughout my entire career. Now that we are close to the finish line, I’m quite excited about this stage of my career, as it is taking flight.

“I’ve been working very hard to ensure that I reach this stage and am happy to see the light.

“It has been a dream to be nominated and to be in this category of the awards. I am really proud to be here, whether I win or lose.”
