AS PART of the fight against illegal mining activities in the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the SAPS will host an information-sharing session with the community of Kleinzee in the local community hall on March 12, starting at 11am.

NPA regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the Northern Cape Justice Cluster role-players had been hard at work eradicating illegal mining in the former diamond mining towns of Kleinzee and Port Nolloth.

“Numerous multidisciplinary tactical operations led by law enforcement agencies within the SAPS, NPA and the Department of Home Affairs have been undertaken close to the border of South Africa and the neighbouring country of Namibia, in an effort to protect the environment and citizens of Namakwa. During these operations, large quantities of mining tools and money amounting to more than R1 million were confiscated,” said Senokoatsane.

He added that a preservation order was obtained for various implements including 114 generators, 59 jackhammers, 27 shovels, 32 hammers and loose drilling bits that were seized in Springbok and were ready for auction.

“The following implements – 110 generators and 120 jackhammers – are stored at the Kleinzee police station for safekeeping while the AFU is drafting a preservation order. At Port Nolloth police station, there are currently 40 generators and 100 jackhammers pending the finalisation of the preservation order.

“These tools are all alleged to have been used for illegal mining activities within the area.”
