THE Kimberley Police are investigating a case of attempted murder, business robbery and possession of stolen property after three suspects went on a rampage and robbed a shop at knife point in the Kimberley CBD on Wednesday.

A member of Operation Wanya Tsots i(#WanyaTsotsi) was reportedly stabbed while he was busy chasing the suspects. He was reportedly treated at the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital for stab wounds on his back.

It is believed the incident happened after the suspects returned from the Kimberley Post Office where they queued for their R350 grant money the whole day but did not receive their money as was expected.

An eye witness said they seemed angry and were swearing and intimidating people in the CBD, and attempted to snatch people’s bags.

Police spokesperson Captain Tessa Jansen said on Wednesday 16 February 2022 at about 16:50 members of Kimberley SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, were patrolling in Phakamile Mabija Road when they heard a crowd screaming and saw them pointing in the direction of Currey Street.

Jansen said the officers went to investigate and saw three men running and enter a tuckshop.

“The members followed and saw one man dropping clothes on the floor,” she said.

Jansen said it was alleged that the three men went into a clothing store and robbed the shop while two threatened the shop assistant and security guard with knives.

“When they exited the store carrying female watches and jeans, they were confronted by male members of the community.

“They allegedly stabbed one on in his back before running away.

“The police apprehended the men and confiscated the clothes,” said Jansen.

“The store manager identified the clothing confiscated by the police.”
