A 38-YEAR-old Nigerian national, Adeyefa Adedamola Adetoye, appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on charges of human trafficking, assault, rape and compelled rape and possession of illegal drugs as well as being an illegal immigrant.

The regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Northern Cape, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, confirmed that Adetoye does not have legal papers to be in South Africa as his permit expired in 2018.

Adetoye was arrested after an intelligence-driven multidisciplinary operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and other specialised SAPS units after the law enforcement agencies received information regarding Adetoye’s alleged transgressions.

Senokoatsane said Adetoye was arrested at a motel in Kimberley, where two female victims, aged 17 and 29, were found in his room.

“The 17-year-old teenage girl and the 29-year-old woman informed the police that they had been trafficked from the city of Johannesburg in Gauteng to the city of Kimberley in the Northern Cape. They had been locked in the hotel room and allegedly prostituted as sex workers by the accused,” said Senokoatsane.

“The police also found illegal drugs in the room belonging to the accused during their search.”

At his first appearance in court, Adetoye informed the court that he would be appointing a legal representative.

The court remanded the matter for attorney and bail information, as Adetoye’s details needed to be verified before he could apply for bail.

The case was postponed until October 26 for bail information.

The accused will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance, while an investigation led by the police is continuing in the matter.
