THE NORTHERN Cape MEC for Health, Maruping Lekwene, hosted a ‘Move for Health’ campaign at Azalea in Roodepan on Thursday.

The main focus of the event was to emphasise the importance of an active lifestyle and to help communities to take the first step towards realising a healthy lifestyle.

Lekwene was joined by the executive mayor of Sol Plaatje Municipality, Kagisho Sonyoni, and senior management in the Department of Health.

Departmental spokesperson Lebogang Lekwene highlighted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed physical inactivity among the risks contributing to global chronic disease morbidity and mortality, especially unhealthy diet and tobacco use.

“Non-communicable diseases, better known as diseases of lifestyle, have reached alarming proportions in our country and also right here in the Northern Cape,” explained Majaha.

The core message delivered during the programme was that physical activity, a healthy diet and a tobacco- and alcohol-free lifestyle are effective for individuals and in principle are an easy and cheap way to prevent disease and improve health.

Members of the community were further motivated that a healthy lifestyle is cost-effective and an affordable public health tool with great potential.
