MORE than 300 households in the Namakwa District have been affected by flooding following heavy rains during the period June 14 to June 18.

The Northern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) said that its Disaster Unit and the Namakwa Disaster Management Unit are assessing the affected area and the damage done.

The assistant director of communications for Coghsta, Tshenolo Meruti-Sebolai, said five areas in the Hantam Municipality have been affected.

“The heavy rain affected Calvinia, Nieuwoudtville, Middelpos, Loeriesfontein and Sutherland,” said Meruti-Sebolai.

“On the morning of June 15, 2023, the Karee Dam was at 100% and overflowing and as a result water had to be redirected to prevent damage to the dam wall.

“Disaster management teams are on the ground assessing the affected areas. Once the assessment is complete, intervention methods will take place,” added Meruti-Sebolai.
