THE POLICE arrested a 27-year-old foreign national after recovering drugs and two unlicensed firearms hidden in a shack at the Samaria informal settlement in Kimberley.

The arrest was made on Friday after the police acted on information received regarding alleged drug activities at the informational settlement.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said members of the Provincial Organised Crime unit, assisted by the Frances Baard Organised Crime Investigations unit, the Kimberley Crime Prevention unit and the Sol Plaatje Municipality Security Services, operationalised the information and obtained search warrants and raided shacks at the settlement.

“The team managed to confiscate mandrax, dagga and tik and recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition hidden in one of the shacks,” said Sam.

“A 27-year-old foreign male national is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of dealing in drugs.”

Sam added that the police are still investigating the inquiry opened in connection with the unlicensed firearms.

The provincial head for Organised Crime, Brigadier Johan Myburgh, lauded the team for the “meticulous and professional” search-and-seizure operation that led to the arrest and the recovery of suspected illegal firearms.

Myburgh emphasised that the proliferation of illegal firearms remains a priority for the SAPS and unabated efforts will continue to address this crime.
