DESPITE some reported challenges such as the need for additional teachers, pupil transport and school furniture, the Northern Cape Department of Education said that the first week of the full-time return of pupils in the Province went smoothly.

Department spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe said the challenges were brought to the attention of the department during site visits and were also reported to the department by the affected schools. He said the department is currently addressing these challenges.

“These isolated challenges are being attended to, while some have already been resolved. We commend the concerted efforts that schools have undertaken to ensure that they can accommodate all learners. Our district offices are continuously monitoring and assessing the situation at schools, to provide support and guidance where necessary,” said Van der Merwe.

He added that “stringent measures” will now be taken by schools to ensure that pupils catch up with learning lost as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown and regulations.

“With all learners now back at school, our curriculum recovery plan will be activated to recover the learning losses that were suffered over the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This will require extraordinary efforts by the department, principals, educators and support staff at schools, with the active involvement of parents in the education of our children to ensure that they excel academically. We appeal to school communities to support our schools and to work with us to raise the bar of education in our Province,” Van der Merwe said.
